Top Biology/Biological Sciences, General Bachelors degree Programs - 2019

As the study of life and the systems that produce/sustain it, biology is a richly diverse field. Specialists can research anything from blue whales to the lifecycle of the cell, from plant diseases to human evolution. Students pursuing this major will learn how to properly conduct experiments in a lab setting, discover the newest research methods, and study the largest and smallest organisms this planet has to offer.

Since “biology” is a general major, the courses required cover a wide range of specialized topics, though focus heavily on mathematics and science. Classes can include: animal biology, immunology, genetics, physiology, embryonic development, molecular biology, chemistry, and evolution. Students in the major will spend significant time in labs, will likely undergo a research project, often assist a biologist with their research, and select a focus they’re interested in. Those drawn to the major tend to be outdoorsy, are curious about all sorts of creatures, excel at science, and are observant.

Biology is a broad field that contains a multitude of specializations. Upon graduation, students of the major can pursue careers in varied focuses, including: botany, marine biology, agronomy, genetics, and ecology, among many, many others. Biologists dedicate themselves to understanding and unlocking the mysteries of life itself, and search for ways to improve it.

Biology fun fact: When the immortal jellyfish (Turritopsis dohrnii) reaches adulthood, it can revert its cells back to a younger state, thus enabling it to live forever.

Celebrities who studied Biology: Lisa Kudrow, actress, comedian; Dexter Holland, singer — the Offspring; Kevin Grevioux, actor.

The average starting salary for a graduate with a degree in Biology/Biological Sciences, General is $41850
