Finance professionals are the backbones of companies and organizations. By budgeting, managing, and exploring solutions, financiers of all kinds help stabilize, maintain, and ensure the futures of the businesses they work for. Students who apply to this major will learn how the markets affect income, how to create long-term strategic plans, and gain a deeper understanding of the economy.

Courses for the major are business and economy oriented, with math playing a large role. Classes can include: portfolio management, accounting and statistics, financial analysis, international finance, and econometrics. Specializations can also be pursued within the finance major, such as real estate. Students drawn to the major tend to be analytical, comfortable with computers and numbers, enjoy puzzles, and are detail-oriented.

The high-demand for finance professionals, as well as the sheer number of ways finances can be applied, results in a number of career path for graduates to choose from. Jobs can include: credit analysts, financial managers, loan officers, stockbrokers, and insurance agents, among countless others. Financiers are responsible not only for the money and assets of the business, they’re also instrumental in making company-wide decisions and policies.

Finance fun fact: Monte Dei Paschi di Siena was the world’s first bank. Located in Tuscany, Italy, the bank still operates today.
