The popular choices for majors at Caltech are Computer and Information Sciences, General, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, General, Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The school has six divisions, all with emphasis on science and engineering, which include 24 majors and 6 minors. Students should expect to take 40.5 units (or five classes) every term to graduate on time and many actually chose to double major.

For freshman, their first term will include classes that are based on their placement exams and graded on a Pass or Fail. Student life is ruled by the honor code, which an encouraged collaboration on homework, take home tests, and flexible schedules for homework.

Also beware: every day during finals week, students should expect to be woken up at 7am by a very loud playing of “Ride of the Valkyries.”
