Talented illustrators are in huge demand in several different fields, from advertising, merchandising, and multimedia to fashion, publishing, editorial, and corporate work. If you are more inclined towards the scientific field, you could even pursue a career in medical, technical, or scientific illustration. Completing a 4-year full-time college education in illustration will give you the best chance of gaining a foothold into this very competitive and challenging career. Fortunately, there are several scholarships available that offer financial assistance to students interested in illustration.

If you are planning on pursuing a career in illustration, you must get started on building up a strong portfolio as early as possible. Most of these scholarships require that you are able to demonstrate that you are passionate about illustration, and that you have real potential in this particular art form.

We’ve put together a few excellent scholarships that you should look into and apply to if you meet the eligibility requirements.

Worldstudio Foundation Scholarship Program

Amount: Up to $6,000

The Worldstudio AIGA Scholarship Program offers a very generous award of up to $6,000 to any eligible student enrolled in an art and design program in any U.S. college. Scholarships are awarded to minority and economically disadvantaged students majoring in fine art, illustration, photography, graphic design, and interactive design.

All applications are assessed by a panel of selected creative professionals. Recipients are selected based on a number of factors, including minority status, quality of work submitted, academic record, strength of the written essay, recommendations, and demonstration of financial need.

The scholarship money is paid directly to the school and applied toward tuition.

Zinggia Art Scholarship

Amount: $2,000

You may be eligible to apply for the Zinggia Art Scholarship if you meet these requirements: You are a US citizen and a resident of the State of Ohio, You are attending a full-time art-related program in any Art School, 2-year technical school or 4-year college in the United States, You have obtained a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The scholarship amount of $2,000 is awarded annually to support students wishing to pursue an artistic career such as illustration, photography, printmaking, painting or graphic design.

Artistic ability, overall creativity, teacher recommendation, academic grades and financial need are some of the factors that are used to assess applications. You will be required to submit five of your best pieces of illustration artwork for evaluation.

CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship

Amount: $3,000

CBC Spouses Visual Arts Scholarship is funded by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. The award aims to provide financial assistance to African American students majoring in art-related fields such as painting, drawing, illustration, architecture, photography, and ceramics. Only U.S. citizens and legal residents can apply for this $3,000 scholarship.

Recipients must be an African American, enrolled in a full-time program related to visual arts, obtain a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrate leadership and community service. You will be required to submit 5 of your best original artworks as part of your application.

Krylon Clear Choice Art Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

The Krylon Products Group awards five $1000 scholarships each year to visual arts students through the Clear Choice Art Scholarship program.

To qualify for this award, you must exhibit artistic talent, demonstrate financial need and be enrolled in a visual arts program in an accredited college in the US. Your portfolio must contain at least 3 to 6 visually stunning art works in any creative medium, excluding graffiti.
