State Grants for Alabama Students

 

Are you planning on going to school in Alabama? This state has plenty of grant and scholarship programs for college! Here are a few you need to note, plus the information you need to apply to them.

Alabama College Grants

Alabama GI Dependents’ Educational Benefit Program

The Alabama GI Dependents’ Educational Benefit Program is for children and spouses of Alabama veterans who have at least a partial disability and honorable discharge. The program awards up to $1,000 per student and the student in question can be eligible for up to 5 standard academic years.

Some of the other qualifications for the scholarship include:

  • Has to be a current resident of Alabama
  • Completed their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Follow the Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • Completed a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act release form (FERPA)
  • Start the program before their 26th birthday

Alabama National Guard Education Assistance Program

For active Alabama National Guard members who can demonstrate financial need and are in good standing, the Alabama National Guard Education Assistance Program currently awards up to just over $5,000 for 120 credit hours.

Applicants need to:

  • Demonstrate a financial need of at least $100
  • Maintain a 2.0 GPA for undergraduate degrees
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA for graduate degrees
  • Enroll in a community college, technical college, college, or university in Alabama

Alabama Scholarships for Dependents of Blind Parents

The Alabama Scholarships for Dependents of Blind Parents is for students who have a parent or guardian who is blind and can demonstrate financial need. This program covers all tuition costs and fees.

Alabama Student Assistance Program

The ASAP is for students who can demonstrate financial need and plans on attending one of the nearly 80 institutions in the state that participate. The grant awards between $300 and $5,000 for undergraduate academic years. A FAFSA is required to apply.

Alabama Student Grant Program

Unlike other grant programs in the state of Alabama, this one is not need based. Students can be eligible for up to $3,000 per academic year, but the individual has to attend one of 12 participating programs including the University of Mobile, Miles College, Faulkner University, and others.

American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Program

Students who are the sons, daughters, grandsons, or granddaughters of veterans of World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and other conflicts can qualify for the American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship Program. Awarding $850 a year, students can reapply each year. Service records, recommendation letters, and a 3.0 GPA is required.

Police Officer’s and Firefighter’s Survivors Educational Assistance Program

The POFSEAP is for dependents and spouses of police officers and firefighters in Alabama who died in the line of study. Tuition, fees, books, and more will be covered for those who enter the program and attend public institutions in the state.

  • Junior and Community College Athletic Scholarship Program
  • Junior and Community College Performing Arts Scholarship Program
  • Senior Adult Scholarship Program
  • Alabama Math and Science Teacher Education Program (AMSTEP)

Each of the grants above have different requirements for applicants. Almost all of them, however, require students to complete at least their FAFSA. More information can be found about requirements, qualifications, and applications on the Alabama Commission on Higher Education website.
