All of the scholarships listed below are awarded to surfers who are looking to put aside their surfboards, even if only temporarily, to get a college education.
This is one of the more prestigious scholarships for surfers. Dedicated to a better surfing future, the International Surfing Association earmarks a total of $20,000 every year to be awarded as scholarships to several applicants who meet their criteria. Each recipient may receive anywhere from $100 to $1,000, depending on their specific needs.
To qualify for this scholarship, you must be recommended by the National Surfing Federation. You must also be below 18 years of age, enrolled in school, and demonstrate financial need.
The Surfer’s Environmental Alliance offers two $3,500 scholarships to eligible applicants. Students focusing on Environmental Studies / Sciences as their major are eligible to apply for the Environmental Studies Scholarship and those focusing on coastal engineering as their major qualify to apply for the Benjamin J. Keiser Memorial Scholarship.
In addition to pursuing a major in either Environmental Studies / Sciences or Coastal Engineering, you must be currently enrolled in or entering a 2 or 4 year college or university, and have a minimum 3.2 GPA. As part of your application, you will also have to submit two essays – a 1,000–word essay on the importance of pollution-free oceans and a 500–word essay highlighting your personal goals, career plans and participation in community activities.
Can you write a short but powerful 200-word essay on why ‘Life is Better When You Surf’? If you can, you stand a good chance of winning this $1,000 award as well two surfboards. Funded by Global Surf Industries, this unique scholarship aims to support surfers who wish to take their education and their surfing to the next level. In addition to the essay, you will also have to submit a recommendation letter written by your coach, mentor or teacher and a short photo essay or video emphasizing why you deserve this scholarship.
The Buddy Pelletier Surfing Founding Scholarship was established to offer financial assistance to members of the East Coast Surfing Community who wish to get a college education. 3 scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded each year to 3 applicants who submit the most compelling essay on how their higher education will benefit the surfing community. All surfers living on the East Coast are eligible to apply for this scholarship. The funds are sent directly to the winners’ colleges.
If you are looking for a scholarship that is based on extracurricular activities rather than grades, the Surfing Madonna Oceans Project scholarship is one you must apply to. This scholarships aims to support and encourage surfers who are committed to preservation of the oceans and are pursuing a career in Oceanography or Marine Biology. The scholarship amount varies every year.
