7 College Scholarships for Hispanic and Latino Students

Finding scholarships can often feel like shopping for jeans. There are a plethora of options, but it’s hard to find the ones that work specifically for you. Additionally,  some jeans may look like the perfect choice. However, a person must do more than just look at the jeans to determine if they are the perfect fit. With that in mind, College Raptor desired to put together a list of scholarships for Hispanic and Latino students that could be the perfect fit.

1. Chicana/Latina Foundation Scholarship

Amount: $1,500

Deadline: March 31, 2020

The Chicana/Latina Foundation Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship for Latina college students. The scholarship awards each recipient $1,500. 

2. National Hispanic Business Women Foundation Scholarship

Amount: Varies

Deadline: TBD for 2020

Recipients of the National Hispanic Business Women Foundation Scholarship possess a permanent home in southern California. Additionally, students demonstrate financial need and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. Also, eligible students participate in some form of community service. Furthermore, applicants are also required to be a college freshman at a college or university in the US.

3. Kia Motors America, Inc. STEAM Scholarship

Amount: $3,400

Deadline: May 29, 2020

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) partnered with Kia Motors to create the Kia Motors America, Inc. STEAM Scholarship. The scholarship supports Hispanic students pursuing a degree in a STEAM field at a HACU-member school. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, and the scholarship highly encourages first-generation students to apply.

4. The Gates Scholarship

Amount: Varies

Deadline: TBD for 2020

The Gates Millennium Scholarship began in 2017. Bill and Melinda Gates designed the scholarship with the goal of helping minority students who meet Pell eligibility afford a college education. Additionally, applicants must be of African American, American Indian-Alaska Native, Asian & Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American ethnicity, have a 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and be a high school graduate, GED recipient or high school senior entering college for the first time as a first-year student.

5. Cafe Bustelo El Cafe Del Futuro Scholarship

Amount: $5,000

Deadline: July 6, 2020

Partnering with HACU, the Cafe Bustelo El Cafe Del Futuro Scholarship awards any undergraduate or graduate student of Latino descent. Interested students must submit an 800-word essay on how their heritage and family have impacted their desire to get a college degree.

6. Ford Driving Dreams Scholarship

Amount: $2,000

Deadline: TBD for 2021

For students who live in certain school districts in North Texas, as well as specific school districts in Houston and Antonio, this scholarship offers $2,000 to graduating high school seniors. Interested students must plan on going to college full-time, have at least a 3.0 GPA, and either score at least a 20 on the ACT or 1050 on the SAT.

7. LULAC National Scholarship Fund

Amount: Varies

Deadline: March 31, 2020

The LULAC National Scholarship Fund gives out multiple awards for amounts from $250-$2,000. Additionally, applicants must be entering college as a freshman and submit their applications through a local LULAC council.

Before taking on riskier financial decisions such as loans, it is better to look into grants and scholarships. These are options that don’t require you to pay money, or a higher amount, back to the lender. These scholarships account for students with a Hispanic or Latino ethnic background.
