Scholarships for Agricultural Majors

Success in agriculture has always been one of the things America takes pride in. Since the American Revolution, farmers have been held up as a symbol of self-reliance and grit. While the future of agriculture is up in the air, it will still surely exist. It also requires dedicated individuals to help push forward. Here are a few possible agriculture scholarships you may qualify for:

American Agri-Women Scholarships

Deadline: Varying

Amount: Varying

The role of women in expanding the American frontier and exploring new lands cannot be overstated. Sacagawea led Lewis and Clark on an expedition that would result in a profound change to the American landscape. Women of the prairie worked tirelessly in thankless roles to help their families survive. Thus, women have been the backbone of the idea of the American pioneer.

Continuing the traditions laid out by those before, the American Agri-Women Foundation honors these women through their four scholarships. For young women interested in agriculture, the various scholarships offered by the AAW provide assistance to realize their dreams.

USDA Tribal Scholars Program

Deadline: TBD for 2021

Amount: Varying

In 1994, the USDA’s Office of Advocacy and Outreach created the Tribal Scholars Program. The office wanted to increase the number of students interested in farming and cultivating the land. The program outlined forty specific colleges and universities, all on or near Native American reservations, that would receive federal support to furnish their agricultural programs. The ultimate intention of the program is to provide over 50,000 students with jobs where their agricultural skills will come in handy.

In conjunction with the USDA, the Tribal Scholars Program offers full-ride scholarships to qualified students, helping them graduate from an accredited Tribal Scholars school in exchange for committing to a USDA job upon graduation. Tribal Scholars must serve at least one year in the USDA for every year they received funding from the program. To qualify, students must be US citizens accepted into a Tribal Scholars college who demonstrate leadership qualities and hope to study a field related to agriculture.

UnitedAg Scholarship

Deadline: TBD for 2021

Amount: Varying

Another foundation dedicated to preserving agricultural study in the US, UnitedAg, in partnership with the Agribusiness Education Foundation (AEF) offers an annual scholarship to students interested in the field (no pun intended). The scholarship’s all-encompassing brochure states that the foundation has awarded over one million dollars to students since 1989. If you want to be the latest (and greatest) member of this exclusive fraternity, the colorful brochure includes an application form and a step-by-step guide to applying for the award.

Students must include academic transcripts, their resume three letters of recommendation, a headshot, and a brief essay on a specific topic, which changes yearly. For the upcoming admissions period, this topic revolves around the hot-button issue of immigration and how it will relate to the future of agriculture.
