5 Leadership Scholarships You Should Apply For

As you may have noticed, community involvement is becoming increasingly significant in your college applications. Of course, colleges and universities look for students who will succeed academically. However, they also want students to involved outside the classroom. Ultimately, it goes back to what you can do for the school. Or, how you will make the school a better place. Good news, there’s also money involved. With that said, here are a few leadership scholarships you should check out:

1. Alliant Energy Innovation Scholarship

Amount: Up to $1,000

Deadline: TBD for 2021

Alliant Energy awards up to 25, $1,000 scholarships each year through the Alliant Energy Foundation Community Service Scholarship Program. However, only students in the Midwest are eligible to apply.

The scholarship selects winners based on a 300-word essay, GPA, and ACT/SAT scores. And of course, community service and leadership roles.

2. Brower Youth Awards for Environmental Leadership

Amount: $3,000

Deadline: May 1, 2020

The Brower Youth Awards honors David Brower, an environmental advocate. Students who demonstrate environmental leadership should consider applying to this scholarship. Along with the monetary reward, winners also get to shoot a short film about their work and stay in the San Francisco Bay Area for a week.

3. Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship

Amount: Varies

Deadline: May 1, 2020

Are you pursuing a bachelor’s degree for the first time at a U. S. accredited institution? In that case, this scholarship may be for you. However, applicants need to be residents of a New England State. Namely Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

With that in mind, the Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund offers renewable, 4-year scholarships to students with financial need. Additionally, students exhibit a commitment to serving others, a strong work ethic, and leadership qualities. Keep in mind, the only academic qualification listed is a minimum 3.0 GPA.

4. Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program

Amount: $1,000+

Deadline: TBD for 2021

Are you a full-time high school senior living in a community served by Comcast? In that case, you’re eligible for this scholarship! However, you need to be referred by a school counselor or principal.

To be eligible, there are a few requirements. First, students need a GPA of 2.8 or higher. Second, students need to demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities or through work experience. Third, they are involved in community service. Finally, they plan to attend an accredited nonprofit college, university, or vocational/technical school in the U.S.

5. James W. Lewis Leadership Award

Amount: $5,000

Deadline: May 15, 2020

The James W. Lewis Leadership Award looks for students that demonstrate leadership qualities in one of many parts of their community, whether it’s advocating for more diversity or creating innovative businesses. High school seniors and college freshmen are welcome to apply.

Interested students need at least a 3.0 GPA, and must send in their resume, transcript, a recommendation, a personal statement, and a headshot. Finalists must submit a video about themselves.

In short, plenty of colleges and universities offer leadership scholarships! Therefore, check to see if your school offers a scholarship too! Not only should you look locally, but you should also search for ones online. Don’t forget, there are many online leadership scholarships that are available. Not only that, you may qualify for many of them!
