The Rube Cereal Machines Sweepstakes

Amount: $20,000

Everybody loves a good Rube Goldberg machine. These whacky devices are all about creating the most bizarre, intricate, and complex machines to do a simple task. In the case of this General Mills sponsored scholarship, that simple task is pouring a bowl of cereal.

To enter, students must be at least 18 years of age, build a Rube Goldberg machine for one of the specified cereals, and submit their entry to be judged.

Amount: $1,000; $2,000

When it comes to these scholarships, you really don’t want to lose your marbles. There are two scholarships hosted by the National Marbles Tournament—the National Champion and Sportsman scholarships. Each year one girl and one boy is named the King or Queen of Marbles over the course of four days of marble matches.

To be eligible, students must be ages 8–14, be the regional champion, be invited to the NMT, and be dedicated mibsters (marble shooters).

Alice Mcarver Ratchford Scholarship

Amount: Varies

Sometimes scholarships are bizarre in their specificity. In the requirements for this scholarship for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the applying student must check off an odd list.

The student must: be a woman, be single, not own a car, live on campus, never have been married, be an undergraduate, and have no other scholarships.
