Every college student’s financial journey looks different. For $1,000 College Raptor Scholarship winner Michayla, navigating college means taking full ownership of her finances while balancing a demanding academic schedule.
Michayla is a senior at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida, where she is studying engineering. She started her college journey as a member of ROTC, which helped her develop discipline and time management skills early in her college career. Like many students, she manages the challenge of paying for college on her own.
To support herself financially, Michayla works multiple jobs both on and off campus. When she is home in New Jersey, she works as a server, putting in long hours to save for school-related expenses. Back on campus, she works at Jersey Mike’s, a sandwich shop that began in New Jersey, bringing a piece of home with her.
Despite her demanding schedule, Michayla approaches her finances with intention and discipline. “So I try to be smart about what I spend my money on. I have a high-yield savings account with most of my money in it, just to get that interest,” she shares.
Her proactive approach to saving and budgeting is one many college students can learn from. Michayla credits College Raptor with helping her discover scholarship opportunities that support her financial goals.
When asked what advice she would give to students in the position of supporting themselves throughout college, Michayla emphasizes the importance of advocating for yourself.
She encourages students to reach out to their schools, ask about additional financial aid opportunities, and actively seek out scholarships. Michayla is grateful she applied for the College Raptor Scholarship, which is helping her move one step closer to achieving her long-term financial goals.
