Making money in college is a must for many students – it’s necessary to afford tuition, fees, food, books, and every other cost that comes with higher education. And even if your tuition is already covered, a job during school could help you save up for fun, or for the future. However, finding jobs with flexible hours for college students can be tough. But there are flexible jobs with part time hours that can accommodate your class schedule and workload is another story. Some employers will be understanding, especially in a college town, but not all will.
There are, thankfully, several flexible jobs for college students that can work with your schedule that do pay well. Here are just 9 of them.
Flexible Jobs for College Students
1. Tutoring
Tutoring is a fantastic way to make some extra cash in school, especially if you’re confident in your abilities in a subject. College students can help those who are struggling at their school, or they may even find work helping students at the local K-12 schools.
Many colleges offer programs to help match students with student-tutors, so that’s a good place to check first. Tutors can also post their contact information online or on-boards around town if they want to freelance. And, of course, there are plenty of opportunities online.
2. College Tour Guide or Brand Ambassador
When you were still in high school but looking at colleges, you likely attended an on-campus tour. Did you know that the tour guide was likely a student themselves? Colleges understand that you have classes to get to, so they’re extremely understanding of your schedule. If your courses aren’t over tour guide times, this could be a great opportunity to earn some extra cash and tell other students what’s great about your school.
If the tour guide opportunity clashes with your schedule, however, you might want to ask about being a brand ambassador instead. These are individuals who visit high schools and college fairs to explain why they should attend the particular college. It’s a fantastic networking opportunity and can also help you get some sales and marketing experience under your belt.
3. Professor Assistant
Professors generally have projects going on outside of the classroom and can use a bit of extra assistance, especially for research, surveying, and fieldwork. You can ask your professors directly about opportunities, connect with departments, or ask the college itself about job openings for assistants. This is another fantastic opportunity for getting some experience related to your major and networking.
4. IT Support or Help Desk
If you have a knack for getting that printer to actually work, you might want to consider a job in IT support or at the college help desk. Computer labs will usually have an individual in the room whose job it is to help with computer and printing problems – and, when you’re not helping someone, you’re free to work on your schoolwork!
Colleges also need students to assist with the overall IT of the college. These positions are usually in the way of a help desk, so that means you will likely be handling low level support tickets for other students and faculty.
5. Dog Walker or Pet Sitter
For a job off campus, if you love animals, consider a position as a dog walker or pet sitter! These two are very much “make your own schedule” types of jobs, which means you don’t have to worry about your work clashing with your classes or schoolwork. If someone wants you to watch their cat for the weekend, but you have a major project, you can simply tell them you’re unavailable!
Students interested in this work can look for online opportunities through websites like Rover or promote their own services on social media and around town (or both!).
6. Translating
Are you proficient in a foreign language? There are translating opportunities online, such as Gengo, where you can earn a bit of extra cash and only take on work when you want to. Only take on these jobs though if you are absolutely confident in your language skills – a basic understanding or Google Translate won’t cut it – and websites that offer these jobs will absolutely require you to take a test to demonstrate your expertise.
7. Food Delivery
Driving for food and grocery delivery services like DoorDash and Instacart is another great flexible job for college students. Hours are 100% set by you, so you can choose when you want to work and when you need to complete projects. There are similar positions that require you to run errands or complete general tasks as well. You will need to have your own car, however.
8. Rideshare Driving
Similar to food delivery, driving for Uber or Lyft allows you to set your own hours. Many cities also have smaller companies if you don’t want to work for the big two. Again, you will need to have your own car. And always keep safety top of mind.
9. Other Freelancing Opportunities
Although many of the jobs listed above can fall under the “freelancing umbrella,” there are plenty of other opportunities available to students depending on your skills. From graphic design to editing and writing to transcription, businesses are regularly looking for assistance.
If you have a knack for writing, for example, you might be able to find some blog writing online or for businesses in your local area. Websites like Fiverr, too, offer opportunities for you to sell your work and services to other individuals and businesses.
There are plenty of part-time jobs with flexible hours for students. Many of them, though, will require some extra motivation from you as they tend to be freelancing type positions. This means you have to make sure you’re setting yourself sufficient work hours, completing the tasks at hand, and keeping work-life balance in mind – it can be easy to overwork yourself! Creating a schedule can help ensure you’re getting your college work done while also getting in some hours to earn some cash.
