Whether you are vegetarian diet keeping with your religious beliefs or because it is a part of your healthier lifestyle, your dietary choice may qualify you to apply for one of many scholarships that are earmarked specifically for vegetarians. We’ve put together a few of the more generous scholarships that are available for vegetarians.
Amount: $5,000 & $10,000
With one $10,000 and two $5,000 awards given out annually, the Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship is without doubt one of the most generous scholarships available for vegetarians. It is administered by the Vegetarian Resource Group, which is a non-profit organization.
Not surprisingly, the winners are expected to meet some pretty stringent criteria. To apply for the Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship, you must be a high school student in your senior year, on course to attend a college or university in the U.S.
As part of your application, you will need to submit an essay on a proposed topic, along with 3 recommendation letters, copy of your transcripts for the last 2 years of high school, and documentation highlighting your initiatives towards promoting a vegetarian lifestyle. This could be in the form of photographs, newspaper entries, or published articles.
Your application for this scholarship will be evaluated on whether you have demonstrated courage, compassion and a strong commitment to promoting a peaceful world through a vegetarian lifestyle. The award money is paid directly to the winners’ college.
The Shaw-Worth Memorial Scholarship is funded by the Humane Society of the United States, New England Regional Office. One $1,500 scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior from New England.
To be eligible for this award, you must show that you are dedicated to participating in activities advocating the protection of animals, directly or indirectly. Following a vegetarian lifestyle may be considered as one way to demonstrate this. Other ways may include giving presentations or speeches on the topic of animal rights, volunteering at animal shelters, or helping to rescue animals in distress.
There are no specific application forms for this scholarship. Anyone who thinks they have done enough to meet the eligibility requirements, can write a letter to the Humane Society with a detailed description of everything they have done or achieved to promote animal protection and their plans for continuing their work in this area either professionally or as a volunteer. This letter must be accompanied by three letters of recommendation and documentation supporting the activities cited in the letter.
This scholarship does not take into consideration academic accomplishments, financial need, a passive liking for animals or a mere desire to protect animals. You must be actively committed to the cause in order to be considered for this award.
