Scholarships for STEM Majors

STEM fields–Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math–are among the most popular and fastest-growing areas of study for incoming college students.

It’s no surprise, as these majors tend to lead to careers in industries with high employment rates and high salaries in an economy that increasingly relies on technology for anything and everything.

This list of scholarships is aimed specifically at students planning to study in a STEM field. The awards range from funds meant to encourage more students to study in one specific field, to general scholarships that are just focused on advancing STEM education.

SMART Scholarship for Service Program

Amount: Full scholarship

Deadline: TBD for 2020 (Opens August 1, 2020)

This program, offered by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), awards a full scholarship to selected students studying from one of a variety of STEM  fields.

The award is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, but it requires that the recipient be at least 18 years old by August of the current of next year. In order to receive the scholarship, students must also complete internships with the DoD and ultimately will receive an offer for employment upon graduation.

Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $10,000

Deadline: TBD for 2021-2022

Women interested in technology are eligible to apply for this scholarship in memory of Anita Borg.

The Google award for $10,000 is meant to help inspire women to be leaders and creators in technology fields.

AfterCollege STEM Scholarships

Amount: $500

Deadline: March 31, 2020

AfterCollege offers two STEM scholarships: the AfterCollege STEM Inclusion Scholarship and the AfterCollege Science Student Scholarship. Both scholarships award $500 to a student majoring in a STEM field.

The Gladys Carol Scholarship Program

Amount: Up to $5,000

Deadline: March 31, 2020

The Gladys Carol Scholarship Program awards high school students planning on enrolling in college and pursuing a STEM major, as well as undergraduates in STEM. Interested students need at least a 3.75 GPA. Students can renew the scholarship for a second year if they meet the listed requirements.

GMiS STEM Scholarships

Amount: Varies

Deadline: April 1, 2020

This scholarship is meant to help bolster STEM careers among Hispanic populations. Students studying STEM fields with at least a 3.0 GPA can apply.

The award is based on merit and can range from $500 to $10,000. The application involves an essay and letters of recommendation.

Regeneron Science Talent Search

Amount: $2,000 to $250,000

Deadline: November 12, 2020

Young scientists can show off their own home-brewed experiments and get a chance to win this scholarship. Three hundred students will $1,000 and those selected as semifinalists and finalists can win much more–up to $250,000.

ASME Auxiliary Lucy and Charles W. E. Clark Scholarship

Amount: $5,000

Deadline: March 3

Graduating seniors who are a member of a FIRST FRC or FIRST FTC team are eligible to receive this $5,000 scholarship if they intend to enter into a STEM field in college.

Students must be nominated by a member or a student member of ASME.

WU Scholars Program Western Union Foundation

Amount: $2,500

Deadline: TBD for 2020

You must be an 18 to 26-year-old undergraduate student enrolled in a STEM program in an accredited post-secondary institution to apply for this $2,500 scholarship funded by Western Union Holdings. The award money goes towards tuition for the academic term immediately following the scholarship

Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology

Amount: $3,000

Deadline: Nomination

The Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology (DFBSST) provides financial assistance to talented African-American students pursuing technical or scientific fields of study. African-American undergrad students enrolled in a scientific or technical program at any of the listed Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) may apply. Winners receive up to $3,000 per year, for up to 4 years.

Deans and faculty members of their respective colleges identify and nominate students. The final selection is made by the Board of Directors of the DFBSST.
