Starting a long-term career while you’re still in school usually isn’t a wise move. After you’re done with school, you’re probably going to be able to get a better job in a field that you’re passionate about. But that doesn’t mean that you should settle for a job that makes you miserable until you start the career you’ve been pining for. There are plenty of part time jobs for students in high school and college with great perks that will help you pass the time, earn some money, and feel good.
- Freelance Writer
You probably got pretty good at writing papers for school. When you’ve mastered your writing skills and are wondering when you’ll ever use them, consider using them to become a freelance writer. Almost anyone can wake up one morning and decide to be a freelance writer. You’ll be able to set your own schedule and work from the comfort of your own home or dorm room.
- Sell Your Crafts
What are you good at? Can you knit, draw, or sew? Do you love making jewelry? Maybe you’re a natural woodworker, and you have a real knack for creating handmade birdhouses. It doesn’t matter what your craft is – all that matters is that there are other people who enjoy the same things you do. There are plenty of ways to sell your crafts online or at events to make a little extra money. Not only do you get to engage in your creative passions, but you can also earn some spare change to be able go out on the weekend.
- Landscaping
Landscaping isn’t a glamorous job, but it may be able to fulfill many of your needs. When you spend so much time at school, you probably don’t get outside very much. Spending your weekends landscaping can give you a reason to get out of the house. Another bonus to landscaping is that it’s a great workout. Mowing lawns and trimming trees can help you get in shape. You’ll be burning off those extra college pounds and building some muscle in the process.
- Work at an Animal Shelter
If you’re passionate about animals, working at an animal shelter will put you in a position to help the cats and dogs that need you the most. You’ll tend to basic care duties and socialize with animals while they’re waiting to find their forever homes. Taking a few animal care courses can help make you a promising candidate and improve the quality of the care you’re able to provide. The job can sometimes be heartbreaking, but also has its rewards. There’s nothing better than tending to a beautiful pet until it finds the perfect family.

Who better to teach students than other students? You’ve been through the material, and you understand it. Not every student knows the subject as well as you do, and they could use your help. Have you ever considered tutoring students who are a few grades behind you? Chances are, the knowledge is still fresh in your mind, and you can actually earn some money by passing that knowledge on to people who need it to succeed.
If you don’t see yourself being happy as a server at a restaurant, you have plenty of alternatives. Sometimes, the best part-time jobs are the ones that require you to think outside of the box. Picking something unconventional can stimulate your mind while helping you afford the necessities until you get your first “real job”.
