New Leader Scholarship

Amount: Up to $8,000

Deadline: March 10, 2020

The New Leader Scholarship is dedicated to providing financial support. Specifically, to recently immigrated students, students of color, and students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Although instituted by the Marin Community Foundation, the scholarship is open to all applicants who meet the above three criteria. The Foundation awards up to $8,000 to eligible students every year, which is renewable. Awardees may also receive additional funds to cover the cost of applying to graduate school as well as graduate school tuition.

Craig W. Reeser Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Deadline: TBD for 2021-2022

Established by Illinois State University, the Craig W. Reeser Scholarship aims to provide financial support to students enrolled in full-time programs related to the social sciences at the University’s College of Arts and Sciences.

To apply for this scholarship, you must have a 3.0 GPA minimum, and demonstrate financial need to cover educational costs. You will also have to submit an essay highlighting your career goals within social science.

Learn.Org Bachelor’s Degree Scholarship In Social Sciences

Amount: $500

Deadline: April 1, 2020 offers one $500 annual scholarship. One student intending to enroll in any full-time social sciences related program at an accredited 4-year college or university in the United States can win. Eligible programs include anthropology, sociology, political science, economics, history, and psychology.

Along with your application, you are required to submit an essay describing how your chosen degree program is preparing you to reach your dreams.

Overseas Press Club Foundation Scholarship

Amount: $3,000

Deadline: December 1, 2020

The Overseas Press Club Foundation offers multiple scholarships. It supports undergrad and grad students interested in pursuing careers as foreign correspondents. The foundation may either award-winning students a $2,000 grant that can be used towards any purpose, or they may fund their overseas assignment.

The OPC Foundation scholarship is open to students enrolled in a social sciences program focused on journalism at a college or university in the US. American students studying in universities overseas are also eligible to apply.

Your application must be accompanied by a cover letter written in an autobiographical style, a resume highlighting your journalistic progression in college and other journalistic work experience, and a 500-word essay detailing an international issue that is in line with your interest and experience.

This is a highly competitive scholarship, but it is worth giving it a shot. Winning this award has also helped launch the careers of many world-famous journalists.
