When it comes to the world of gaming, progress continues to be made. Console and PC games are considered by many to be works of art. Games on handheld devices such as phones and iPads are also becoming increasingly popular. It is a great time to be going to school for game design! As such, here are some scholarships that can help gamers out.
Award – $1,000/year

This annual scholarship is a great way to kick off your funding efforts for a degree in the field of animation. It is awarded to high school seniors. They must be pursuing a degree in animation, which includes Game Animation, Game Art, Game Design, Game Development, Game Management, and Game Production. Applicants must also submit their application form and essay concerning “What specific skill do you most want to develop?” by the June 1st deadline.
Award – $2,500
Deadline – May 31, 2020
The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences has three scholarships available for undergraduate students looking to go into the video game industry. The three scholarship funds are WomenIn, Randy Pausch, and Mark Beaumont. Each concerns a different aspect of the video game industry. All three funds are for students starting their second year in undergraduate studies in any major (the WomenIn fund is specifically for women). Applicants must have a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. A personal statement and two letters of recommendation are required.
Award – $1,500

Every year, the Women in Animation Scholarship awards up to three women-identifying students $1,500. For students who are currently pursuing animation and have a financial need, this scholarship also awards winners a free year of Women in Animation. Applying students must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in college, have a minimum 2.85 GPA, as well as a Women in Animation member. Students must submit 6-10 pieces of their artistic work, a photo of themselves, two letters of recommendation, and an essay.
Award – $3,000
Deadline – February 1, 2020
The ESA Foundation awards up to thirty awards to female and minority students pursuing degrees that lead to careers in computer and video game arts. Fifteen scholarships are available to high school seniors who have already been accepted into a video game-related program, and fifteen are available to full-time undergraduate students. Students must be US citizens, and they must also maintain a GPA of 2.75 or above on a 4.0 scale.
Award – ½ In-State Tuition Costs (~$15,000)

UCI is taking gamers seriously. There are currently 10 scholarships available for the school’s League of Legends competitive team members. This program is in its first year. UCI has built an arena for gamers that is open to everyone on campus for $4/hour. It has top-of-the-line gaming computers and chairs (80 in all), and several console spaces as well. In addition, they have a Computer Game Science degree that combines computer science with game design. UCI’s goal is to become the “Mecca for gamers,” and with programs like these, it could be well on its way.
