Narrowing down college options means also thinking about what you don't wantIf at some point your college search becomes overwhelming, it may be time to change track. Narrowing down college options means also thinking about what you don’t want. Take a break from narrowing down college options based on whether or not the college offers everything that you are looking for. Instead, start striking off colleges based on what you don’t want.

It’s simple really. It just requires you to make a small mind shift.

Find Your Deal-breakers

Start by putting aside your earlier list of features to look for and make a new list of things that are a deal-breaker for you.

For example, let’s say you definitely do not want to attend a college that is located in a rural area. Put that down on your list of things you DO NOT want. Immediately strike out all colleges that are fit within those parameters.

Then consider the size of the college. Do you know for sure you do not want to attend a large college where very few people are likely to know you by name? Strikeout all colleges that are too large for comfort.

If you do this for each feature that you do not want in your college, you will be left with a manageable list of colleges to explore further.
