As its name suggests, biochemistry can be considered a combination of biology and chemistry. More specifically, biochemistry is the study of chemical processes necessary for life. Biochemists study plants, animals, and people and look at the smallest chemical reactions within an organism. Students of the major will learn what chemicals break down food, how plants gain their energy from the sun, and how one chemical process can affect the whole system.

Biochemistry is a multidisciplinary field that combines several different sciences and mathematic areas. Classes can include: microbiology, organic chemistry, calculus, analytic chemistry, physics, genetics, and cell biology. Students attracted to the the major tend to be interested in nature, enjoy solving puzzles, proficient at science, and are naturally curious.

Biochemistry is a growing field that many industries are incorporating into their businesses. Graduates of the major can find careers in varying industries, including: health and beauty care, chemical manufacturing, nutrition, and medicine, among many others. With so many important applications, and discoveries yet to uncover, biochemistry is an important field in the scientific arena.

Biochemistry fun fact: 99% of the human body's mass is made up of six elements: hydrogen, carbon, calcium, nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus.
