Top Creative Writing Bachelors degree Programs - 2019

Novels, screenplays, poetry, essays, lyrics, short stories, and memoirs are just a few mediums in which writers create stories and art. Writers are the storytellers behind blockbuster movies or book empires, the creators of Emmy-winning TV shows or life-changing memoirs. Writers use their vision and talent to create story and art. Students of the major will learn the technical aspects of the craft, such as character development, story structure, pacing, and word choice.

With so many different genres — fiction, non-fiction, poetry, playwriting, etc. — writing courses cover a wide variety of writing skills. Classes may include: the contemporary short story, poetry writing, fiction workshop, creative non-fiction writing, the creative process, and a host of literature courses. Students will choose an area of specialization, attend readings, give and receive feedback in workshops, and create a portfolio of diverse work. Those attracted to the major tend to be creative, enjoy storytelling, reading, and are critical thinkers.

Writing skills are highly coveted by employers of all fields, meaning graduates of the major can pursue a wide variety of careers dealing with writing. Jobs can include: copywriter, novelist, screenwriter, freelance writer, technical writer, editors, and business writer. There are countless forms of storytelling that utilize the written word, and creative writers make use them to craft unforgettable stories, characters, sentiments, and language.

Creative Writing fun fact:The Scarlet Pimpernel is the first story about a masked vigilante, and became the inspiration for Zorro and Batman. Arguably the origin of superheroes, it was written in the early 1900s by Baroness Emma Orczy.
