Whereas zoology is the study and observation of the animal kingdom, animal sciences focuses more on domesticated animals and the agricultural impact they have. Animal scientists work hard enhance breeding, husbandry, and goods production practices. Students who apply to this major will learn what methods produce the highest quality milk in dairy cows, how eggs are distributed from farm to market to consumer, research the best ways of preventing disease in livestock, and learn about technological advances in the field.

As a subset of agricultural science, animal sciences have a focus on biology and chemistry. Classes for the major can include: animal behavior, crop science, anatomy and physiology, genetics, and animal nutrition. Students in the major usually visit dairy, cattle, hog, and poultry farms for hands on experience, visit labs, and complete an internship. Those drawn to the major tend to be animal lovers, organized, and interested in science.

Animal science can lead to many different career paths. Some jobs can include: farmer/rancher, veterinarian, food processing manager, livestock market forecaster, animal care specialist, or companion animal store manager. Animals play a large part in our lives, and it’s up to animal science experts to ensure the sustainability of the goods/services animals provide, as well as make sure the animals are getting the proper care and attention.
